Course Requirements

  1. Attendance& Participation:  I’ll take attendance  every class session. Being present in the class will help you better understand the material. Participation will be assessed in ways that we will collaboratively discuss together during our first class meet. Attendance and participation is a combined grade.
  2. Roundtable Panel: Either individually or in self-selected groups, you will facilitate a round table panel discussion where you foster a dialogue centered on one of the readings assigned for that particular week. Each group will facilitate discussion 1 time over the course of the semester. While you can use a PowerPoint, please note that this is a discussion based form of presentation. This means you’re not merely talking AT your audience—you’re pulling them into a conversation, eliciting thought and discussion. THIS IS NOT A LECTURE PRESENTATION. Detailed assignment guidelines can be found here. Please sign up for your facilitation slot here.
  3. Weekly Perusall Annotation: Each week you’ll be responsible for annotating at least two of our readings on Perusall. There will be a total of 10 Perusall Annotation assignments each totaling 2 points. You’ll be expected to leave one detailed comment per reading. Detailed guidelines here.
  4.  Weekly Padlet Response: Each week there will be a prompt on Padlet. You are responsible for responding to the Padlet prompt. Each Padlet board response is worth 2 points. There will be 10 prompts total throughout the semester. To receive full credit you must respond directly to the prompt itself. Detailed guidelines here.
  5. Is It Colonized or Nah? Let’s Take a Trip : This written assignment will include a field trip or as we call it in sociology…field work. This exercise corresponds to our unit on colonization/decolonization but it can be done at any point during the semester. It must be submitted no later than 5/23 by 11:59pm. Detailed guidelines can be found here.
  6. Deconstructing the Charter School: An Exercise in Understanding Privatization & Neoliberalism: This written assignment will correspond to our unit on neoliberalism & privatization in education.
